A superb fusion of techno trance and Mad Max overdrive, Sirat ranks high among the year’s most gripping and unforgettable big screen experiences. Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes and named one of 2025’s best films by The New Yorker, Sight & Sound, Indiewire, and John Waters. (MK)

NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE
Canada | 2025 | DCP | 98 min.
Director: Matt Johnson
Cast: Matt Johnson, Jay McCarrol, Ben Petrie
All Matt and Jay ever wanted is to play the Rivoli. These lovable goofballs have spent 17 years concocting farfetched schemes with the sole goal of getting their nonexistent band booked at the Toronto club. So far, they’ve struck out every time. After botching their most harebrained plan yet, they accidently open a rip in the space-time continuum and travel back to where it all began. BlackBerry director Matt Johnson’s feature-length expansion of his cult favorite show is a hilarious, meta blast into the (very recent) past that delivers for die-hards and newbies alike. (MK)
THURS., 2/5, 7 p.m.
RESURRECTION
China, France | 2025 | DCP | 160 min. | Mandarin with English subtitles
Director: Bi Gan
Cast: Shu Qi, Jackson Yi, Mark Chao
In a world where humans have lost the desire to dream, a rogue society of “fantasmers” delves even deeper into their subconscious. Spanning decades and adopting a variety of film styles across its five chapters, this feast for the senses is capped off with one of Bi Gan’s characteristically virtuoso, serpentine ultralong takes. Named one of the ten best films of 2025 in The New Yorker, Sight & Sound, and Indiewire. “Electric, dramatic, fantastic… Resurrection is a cinephile’s delight” (Manohla Dargis, The New York Times). A USEFUL GHOST
Thailand, France, Singapore, Germany | 2025 | DCP | 130 min. | Thai with English subtitles
Director: Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke
Cast: Davika Hoorne, Apasiri Nitibhon, Wisarut Himmarat
Appliance repairman Krong is summoned to the apartment of a self-described “Academic Ladyboy”, whose vacuum cleaner appears to be haunted. As the two bond, Krong relays the story of an appliance factory heir who was reunited with his dead wife after another vacuum cleaner became possessed by her spirit. A Useful Ghost comes on like a light, absurdist comedy but gradually morphs into something deeper, darker, and more political. For his directorial debut, Thai writer-director Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke has crafted a surreal, intensely cinematic ghost story with a lot on its mind. “Boonbunchachoke has made a darkly hilarious film that deserves to be remembered for much more than its shock value” (IndieWire). A POET
Colombia, Germany, Sweden | 2025 | DCP | 120 min. | Spanish with English subtitles
Director: Simón Mesa Soto
Cast: Ubeimar Rios, Rebeca Andrade, Guillermo Cardona
Once a promising poet, Oscar has since devolved into a total failure—drunk, unemployed, alienated from his family, and terminally aggrieved at the success of his peers. While teaching at a Medellín high school, he encounters a gifted student whose poetry reignites his passion. Taking this prodigy under his wing, Oscar attempts to get his life back on track—or at least secure a better one for his protege. Shot on gritty 16mm with a nonprofessional cast, this caustically funny portrait of an artist as a middle-aged loser is surprisingly poignant. (MK)
THURS., 2/26, 7 p.m.
FIUME O MORTE!
Croatia, Italy, Slovenia | 2025 | 112 min. | Croatian and Italian with English subtitles
Director: Igor Bezinović
In the aftermath of World War I, Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio led an unauthorized invasion of the small coastal city of Fiume, kicking off a 16 month occupation. This fascinating historical footnote is the leaping off point for a lively, inventive hybrid documentary that restages D’Annunzio’s siege with an amateur cast on the present day streets of what is now Rijeka, Croatia. Winner of the top prize at the 2025 Rotterdam Film Festival. “Irreverent and wildly entertaining… A timely reminder that laughing at fascists is a form of resistance” (Screen Daily).
