Special Presentations

The Cinematheque is the place to be for “marathon cinema” this fall! Along with the screenings of The Mysteries of Lisbon and The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu in our Premiere Showcase series, our autumnal offerings include restored prints of Claude Lanzmann’s complete 10-hour-plus Shoah (screened over two Sunday afternoons in September) and Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 205-minute dystopian sci-fi epic World on a Wire. Plus, we will also welcome accomplished Hollywood director and film historian Joe Dante in-person to present an extended cut of his smash hit comedy Gremlins (co-presented with the WUD Film Committee at the new Union South’s Marquee Theater) as well as Dante’s first film, the 4 hour, 40 minute found footage epic, The Movie Orgy. Our final Special Presentation for the season is an evening of silent cinema, spotlighting the works of director William C. de Mille, lesser known brother of Cecil B. DeMille.

Gizmo, a cute and fuzzy “Mogwai,” spawns a legion of vicious, reptilian gnomes at Christmastime. Soon, a small town is besieged by hordes of gremlins, smoking cigars, wielding chainsaws, and...watching Disney movies. Hysterically funny and anarchically inspired, this anti-E.T. (produced by Steven Spielberg!) was one of the most successful films of the 1980s. Director Joe Dante will introduce this screening of an alternate cut of Gremlins, which features six minutes more of footage not seen in its original release version!
