The Kid Brother
USA, 1927, 35mm, b/w, 103 min.
Directed by Ted Wilde and J.A. Howe
With Harold Lloyd, Jobyna Ralston, Walter James
Last spring's UCLA Restorations series was such a success, we couldn't resist a postscript. The youngest son of a small town sheriff (the great Harold Lloyd) is hoodwinked into giving a performance license to a traveling medicine show. It is "as gaggy a gag picture as [Lloyd] has ever done... just a series of gags, one following the other, some funny and others funnier" (Variety, 1927). UCLA Restoration funded by the Packard Humanities Institute. Live piano accompaniment by David Drazin!

The Bat Whispers
USA, 1930, 35mm, b/w, 83 min.
Directed by Roland West
With Chester Morris, Chance Ward, Una Merkel
A haunted house and a cat burglar named “The Bat” are the focus of this year’s Halloween screening. Both an early sound film and an early experiment with the widescreen format, The Bat Whispers features dollies down the sides of buildings and elaborate shadow effects. No wonder the film reportedly inspired Bob Kane’s world-famous Batman character...
